The unlined Piccadilly — a classic deconstructed

The unlined Piccadilly — a classic deconstructed

This season we’ve reimagined our signature penny loafer - stripping back the lining to leave an elegant, light and supremely comfortable shoe, ready for summer and today’s relaxed style.

Nearly a century ago we made what were called ‘house shoes’ for King George VI (today’s Harrow, if you’re interested.) Being ‘house shoes’ they were unlined because form followed function : the King wanted comfortable shoes to wear at home after stepping out of highly structured riding boots. Similarly today’s summer style is often suited to the lightness and elegance of an unlined shoe.

Suede or London Grain is soft against skin, allowing the Piccadilly to be worn without socks - ideal for shorts or rolled up trousers - and so perfect for a casual summer’s evening. But our smart wardrobes are also changing, with unstructured tailoring and relaxed lines increasingly replacing more formal options — this is the ideal loafer for pairing with summer's linens and lighter fabrics. And just like we chose those fabrics for their breathability, so an unlined loafer will keep your feet well ventilated and fresh.

We've introduced the unlined Piccadilly ready-to-wear in dark brown London Grain, mink suede and a new muted tan — raw umber. (Or contact us to have your shoe made to order.) Because our suedes are high quality unsplit skins, they retain their structure better over time, ensuring that like all Edward Greens, our unlined Piccadillys are made to last.
